OK VROCers, anyone recognize this blonde hair?
Most of the huge Saguaros have holes in them. This is why. Little birds peck out the holes and use them for nests. There is a bird getting ready to celebrate New Year's Eve in his little cactus home.
We decided to spend some time at the Pima Air Museum on New Year's Eve day. I wasn't too enthusiastic about it.....until we got there. I was totally amazed at some of planes, and the history behind them. It's the best collection of this type in the World. Story about what they did in combat and the stories behind them. We also went aboard Air Force 1, the one John Kennedy used. It was left exactly like it was when it was in service. There were other newer Presidents planes, but we didn't see inside them. What a way to end the year!!!
The SR-71 Blackbird. Out of the over 200 planes at the Pima Air Musuem, this one really got my attention! It could fly Coast to Coast in 68 minutes and a few seconds. At 80,00 feet, it could take a clear picture of a car license plate! I won't bore you here with other specs, but it was truly amazing and flew over Mach 3.2 air speed. The actual speed is still classified information. If you'd like to know more about this plane, click here.
There were many very small personal aircraft here, this was one of the cute ones. There are over 200 planes on display, and many others being restored. This is probably the largest varied collection of Military and civilian planes in the World! The museum is just fantastic.
A B-29. A plane like this dropped the Atomic Bombs on Japan. These were used extensively as bombers during WW2.
a coast Guard C-123
This plane is known as the pregnant Guppie. It was used as a transport plane for NASA.
This is a line of Trainers and Fighters. there were so many, I didn't take pictures of them all.
This is a MIG 19, A Russian design, built by the Polish, and flown by the Chinese........
Coast Guard H-52 and an H-3. These were still in service when I was on active duty in the Coast Guard.
This was a B-17 that was restored by the 8th Air Force survivers, all volunteer work.
As the sign says, this is the FIRST flag that went ashore on Utah Beach on D Day! the date was June 6, 1944.
This is a B-24. This plane was leased to England after WW2 for shore patrol duty, then, it went to India for more patrol duties.
Jack has been a good tour guide. He's been here several times, and was able to tell us a vast amount about most of the aircraft here in the museum.
A peak in the Saguaro National Park. It's going to be a beautiful sunset!
Romy and Didsbury Dave. This couple will plan to "Tie the Knot" during the WWR 08 in July, during the rally in Charleston, Oregon.
The hills are alive with giant Saguaro cactus.....The sun is setting on the 31st of December 2007.
Looking down on the Sonora Desert West of the Tucson Mountains.
Gates Pass, on the West side of Tucson, in the Tucson Mountains. This is in the Saguaro National Park.
The sun goes down for the last time in 2007!
